The Sacraments

Baptism

The first of the sacraments — a welcome into the family of God.

In Baptism, we are washed clean, joined to Christ, and welcomed into the Church. It is a day of great joy — for the one being baptized, for the family, and for the whole parish that receives a new brother or sister in faith. Whether you are bringing a child to the font or seeking Baptism yourself, Our Lady of Mercy is glad to walk with you toward this first and founding sacrament.

Baptism for children

Parents who wish to have their child baptized are asked to contact the parish office to begin. The Church asks that at least one godparent be a practicing Catholic who has received the sacraments of initiation; the priest will explain what is needed. A short preparation helps parents and godparents understand the sacrament and their role in raising the child in the faith.

Baptism for adults

Adults who wish to be baptized — or who were baptized in another Christian tradition and feel drawn to the Catholic Church — are welcomed through a process of prayer, learning, and companionship known as the Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA). It unfolds at a gentle pace, in the company of others on the same journey. There is no obligation in simply asking; the first step is a conversation.
