The Sacraments

Reconciliation

The sacrament of God’s mercy — a fresh start, always offered.

In the Sacrament of Reconciliation — also called Confession or Penance — we bring our sins to God and receive his forgiveness through the ministry of the priest. It is one of the great gifts of the Church: a chance to begin again, to be unburdened, and to know with certainty that we are forgiven and loved. However long it has been, and whatever you carry, you are welcome to come.

When to come

Confession is also available before or after other Masses when a priest is present, and during the seasons of Advent and Lent the parish often offers additional times — watch the bulletin.

If it has been a while

Many people feel nervous about confession, especially after time away. There is no need to worry. The priest is there to help, not to judge, and he will gently guide you through it — just tell him it has been a while and he will walk you through each step. You may confess face to face or from behind a screen, whichever you prefer. What is shared in confession is held under the absolute seal of the sacrament and is never repeated.

1
Come as you are
Take a moment beforehand to reflect on your life since your last confession. If you’d like a guide, an examination of conscience is available in the church or from the office.
2
Confess and be heard
Tell the priest your sins simply and honestly. He may offer a word of encouragement or counsel, and will give you a small penance — a prayer or act to help you begin again.
3
Receive absolution
The priest offers the prayer of absolution, and your sins are forgiven. You leave unburdened, reconciled with God and the Church.
Would you like to talk first?
If you’d prefer to speak with the priest before coming, or arrange a private time, the parish office is glad to help.
